Iowa City was the 47th community in the nation to achieve STAR certification and was awarded a 4-STAR certification in March 2016. The city was the fifth city in Iowa to receive certification and with an approved final score of 484.8, qualifying Iowa City as the highest-scoring city in Iowa.
Iowa City’s City Council is committed to sustainability and has focused strategic plan goals around climate change, equity, walkability and other issues to create an even higher quality of life for our residents. The City has identified key areas for improvement and are using the STAR framework to continue to use best practices in city operations.
After completing the full certification process, the City is committed to reporting annual progress through the STAR Community Indicators, where the public can track our progress in these key areas and use the data to compare our successes with other cities nation-wide.
