The American Planning Association defines green infrastructure as an “interconnected system of natural areas and open space that conserves ecosystem values, helps sustain clean air and water, and provides benefits to people and wildlife.” Communities may implement a wide range of green infrastructure actions including low impact development (LID) methods, multi-purpose neighborhood and regional water management, and the promotion of habitat patch and ecological connectivity through urban forestry, agriculture, public spaces, and natural resource conservation planning.

This indicator requires participating communities to map areas designed and maintained to provide a network of green infrastructure features that integrate with the built environment and conserve ecosystem functions. Data is collected locally.
