Devens is designated a US EPA Superfund site however since 1996, the majority of brownfield sites have been remediated or are undergoing active remediation. In partnership with the US Army, clean-up and monitoring continues on several sites, including the Moore Army Airfield, Shepleys Hill Landfill, Consolidated Landfill on Patton Road, and Salerno Circle former housing area. As Devens and the surrounding towns obtain their drinking water primarily from groundwater, a number of additional monitoring activities have been and continue to be undertaken by the military, Devens and private industries located in Devens. in Devens Several site on Devens continue to conduct active monitoring. Devens redevelopment (since remediation) has focused on more sustainable forms of development in order to prevent a repeat of past contamination and to improve the health and safety of all residents in Devens and the surrounding region.
