The financial means to purchase healthful food is an ongoing challenge for millions of low-income families in the U.S. Food insecurity prompts families to turn to federal assistance, food banks, or other charitable and nonprofit community resources. This indicator assesses the availability of fresh, healthful food to the overall population and of children in the community. Data is provided at the county level by Map the Meal Gap.

Food Insecurity data is provided by county. Since a portion of Devens is within Worcester (9.8% overall and 13.8% child) and Middlesex County (8.7% overall and 10.8% child), the weighted average for Devens would be 9.3% of the overall population that is food insecure and 12.3% of children that are food insecure. Devens is home to Loaves and Fishes - a local Food Pantry that services people who live in Ayer, Devens, Groton, Harvard, Littleton, and Shirley. In 2016 alone, Loaves and Fishes served over 2000 individuals and families in need. Loaves and Fishes not only provides food, but also counselling, clothing, holidat gifts and school supplies for families in need. This is a great resource that helps struggling families and individuals in need through tough times until they are able to get back on their feet and support themselves.
