In many parts of the country, the choice of travel is limited to driving due to land use patterns and scarcity of transit service. Even when destinations are nearby, lack of pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure makes walking and bicycling unsafe. People will only shift their mode of travel to walking or bicycling if they have safe, supportive infrastructure, thereby gaining the affordability benefits and reducing vehicle miles traveled.

This indicator assesses the fatality risks to bicyclists and pedestrians in participating communities. Data is available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS).
