For many areas of the country, the current climate is already measurably different from historical climate conditions. Common indicators of climate change are higher annual average temperatures and rising surface water levels, both in coastal and some inland communities. Serious impacts of climate change may include flooding, drought, prolonged heat waters, and/or increased frequency of extreme storm events.

This indicator evaluates the resilience of built, natural, economic, and social systems to climate change impacts. Data is supplied by communities and is based on a community vulnerability assessment.

Devens has recently received funding from the State of Massachusetts to conduct a full Climate Vulnerability Assessment which is expected to be completed in 2017. This will compliment and expand on our existing Devens Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan to make Devens better equipped to plan and prepare for climate change. A climate change preparedness vulnerability assessment will help Devens identify key climate-related vulnerabilities and hazards and develop strategies to improve resilience throughout Devens. These strategies will help further reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare and safeguard our businesses, residents, flora and fauna from the impacts of climate change.

Devens has already integrated climate change mitigation and adaptation components throughout its regulatory permitting process. The DEC Development Rules and Regulations promote better air quality through reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and increased climate preparedness/adaptation by requiring certain green building and green infrastructure elements on all projects.
