This indicator calculates the portion of the community’s electricity generated from renewable energy sources. Data is supplied by communities based on the generating capacity of the electricity provider. Allowed renewable energy sources include biomass, solar thermal, photovoltaic, wind, geothermal, fuel cells using renewable fuels, small hydroelectric generation (<30 MW), third-party certified low-impact hydroelectric generation, digester gas, municipal solid waste conversion, landfill gas, ocean waves, ocean thermal, and tidal currents.

Devens continues to diversify its renewable energy portfolio with the addition of close to 3MW of solar photovoltaic electricity that was installed on the rooftops of two of Devens largest industrail buildings in 2016. A net-metering policy adopted for residential homes in Devens has led to a number of residential solar installations, including the Devens sustainable housing pilot project which consists of zero-net energy homes as well as positive-net energy homes that produce more electricity that they consume over a given year. This was accomplished by constructing super-insulated homes that achieved a HERS rating of as low as -36. To provide a better mix, Devens also purchases wind energy from Maine. As demand shifts, Devens will continue to evaluate its electrical load needs and adjust the balance to include more renewable energy where feasible. In addition to rene
