Everyday choices about how to travel to work, school, shopping, and other destinations have implications on local sustainability. Dependence on automobile travel, particularly single-occupancy driving, leads to traffic congestion, worsening air pollution, and increasing carbon emissions. Reliance on driving impacts household budgets due to the expense of purchasing and maintaining cars, the cost of gasoline, and other incidental costs, such as parking and tolls. Congestion adds to commuting times, which reduces leisure time at home and has been shown to decrease physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness while contributing to higher rates of obesity and high blood pressure.

Henderson, Nevada

Henderson's auto-oriented development patterns essentially require residents to own a vehicle to be able to travel easily and efficiently throughout the region. More than eighty percent of Henderson residents currently commute in single passenger vehicles.
